According to the AP stylebook, African-American and black are both acceptable terms for an American black person of African descent.
Follow AP style and hyphenate African-American when it used as an adjective or as a noun: Many African-American students expressed interest. Many African-Americans attended.
Exceptions: Do not hyphenate UGA’s African American Cultural Center or its Institute for African American Studies.
